Text: I Peter 1:13-16.
Introduction: When you think of a “holy person who do you think about?
What makes that person stand out?
Holy is defined as “Without sin”
Story of disciple now; hearing Ryan’s choices of his idea of holy people
Hebrews 4:15 “ For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin”.
Jesus is our example of “ Holiness”.
*We must have goals & objectives in our lives
How do we get to that goal of holiness?
Her are 5 elements of a holy person.
I. CONVICTIONS. Ephesians 4:22-24 “ put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lust, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”
A. Standards are set for us.
B. We must establish our convictions through God’s word by the Holy Spirit.
C. Someone has said “A belief is what you hold, a conviction is what holds you”
II. COMMITMENT.
A. A conviction is not truly a conviction unless it includes a commitment to live by.
B. Some one looked @ their ham & egg breakfast & said the chicken had a part in the breakfast but the pig was committed to the breakfast.
C. Being a holy man takes a commitment.
1. To God.
2. To reading His word.
3. To obeying Him.
4. To the church.
III. DISCIPLINE.
A. We must discipline ourselves to the commitments we’ve made.
B. Titus 2:11-12 “ For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness & worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, & godly in the present age,
C. A body builder does not become muscular over night. He has to discipline himself to lifting weights on a daily basis to obtain his goal.
IV. DEPENDENCE ON THE SPIRIT. Romans 12:2 “ And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good & acceptable & perfect will of God.”
A. We must realize that we cannot change our hearts; this is the exclusive work of the Holy Spirit.
B. We must change but must depend on the Holy Spirit to work us through that change.
V. DESIRE. A God centered desire.
A. God does not want us to be holy for us to just look good. God wants us to live holy lives so we will bring honor & glory to Him through Jesus Christ.
B. If we are honest all of us are self-centered. This is not honoring God.
Close: When you think of someone as Holy what characteristics do you see in him or her? Or do you see a holy person as someone who:
Wears a robe?
Recites chants?
Prays long prayers?
Carries a bible all the time?
Quotes scripture all the time?
Someone has said Holiness does not consist in mystic speculations, enthusiastic fervors, or uncommon abstinences; it consists in thinking as God thinks and willing as God wills.
