Message Point: Sin separates us from God and corrupts the world.

Focus Passage: Genesis 3:1-13

Supplemental Passage: For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NASB)

Introduction: The drunk husband snuck up the stairs quietly. He looked in the bathroom mirror and bandaged the bumps and bruises he’d received in a fight earlier that night. He then proceeded to climb into bed, smiling at the thought that he’d pulled one over on his wife. When morning came, he opened his eyes and there stood his wife. "You were drunk last night weren’t you!" "No, honey." "Well, if you weren’t, then who put all the band-aids on the bathroom mirror?"

I. Sin separates us from God

i. He said, "I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself." (Genesis 3:10 NASB)

ii. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23 NASB)

iii. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NASB)

b. All sin, not just the “bad” ones. To God, sin is sin. Lust is the same as adultery, hate is the same as murder. Man gives degrees to sin to try to justify himself. Gossip = Stealing = Murder = Homosexuality = Lying = Cheating = Gluttony = Idolatry = Boasting = Arrogance = Pride = etc

c. There are sins of commission and sins of omission. Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin. (James 4:17 NASB)

II. God knows our sin

a. And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" (Genesis 3:11 NASB)

b. He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground. (Genesis 4:10 NASB)

III. The cure for our sin is Jesus

a. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB)

b. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5 NASB)
