Title: Lord’s Prayer

Theme: Get a better understanding of the way to pray by the Lord’s prayer.

Text: Matthew 6:5-15

Mat 6:5 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites (actors). For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

“when you pray” – don’t’ pray as the hypocrites – the actors, the show offs

(Mat 6:6) "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

David constantly refers to that “secret place” in Psalms.

Psalms 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." 3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. 4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

(Mat 6:7) "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

“when you pray”,

Vain repetitions -this does not mean repeating this prayer or reading a prayer but to repeat a prayer over and over again to expect to get somewhere with God. It has to come from within the heart.

(Mat 6:8) "Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

(Mat 6:9) "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

“Our Father in heaven”

Reminds us of our position “come boldly to the throne of grace”

Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. (16) Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

He is our father. We cry “ABBA Father”

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

Hallowed be Your name

Holy is your name. Your name is reverenced. “Do not take the Lord’s name in vain.”

Exodus 20:7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

(Mat 6:10) Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Your kingdom come.

What is God’s kingdom like? Reminds me of God’s agenda. God’s plan and God’s purpose. Many times it is so much different than what we are used to.

Your will be done

God’s will. This makes it more personal. First we are praying for the world and God’s plan but now we are praying the more personal prayer.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

MESSAGE Romans 12:1-2 So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life--your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life--and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. (2) Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

On earth as it is in heaven.

(Mat 6:11) Give us this day our daily bread.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Our basic needs to be met. Why do we have to be afraid? “this day”. Each day one day at a time. Why worry?
