Sing Of The Mercies Of The Lord Series

"I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations." (Psalm 89:1, KJV)

1. "I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever"

How often as we travel on the journey of life is our attention suddenly and effectively arrested by the sounds of words and music composed to worship God?

From the truths of God set to music we receive solace, encouragement, and renewed strength.

Singing praises to God can do God’s work when other avenues have failed.

It has been said that Martin Luther, great theologian that he was, accomplished more reformation by setting all of Germany singing than he did with his preaching.

In every revival or spiritual renewal you will find fresh songs of praise being written and sung.

When Israel walked over the bed of the Red Sea and afterward witnessed the deliverance of God by drowning the Egyptians in the same place - they spontaneously composed a hymn of praise to God. (Exodus 15:1-21)

Moses closed his long career with a song. (Deut. 31:30-32:43)

Jehosaphat, good king of Judah, defeated the enemy with song! (2 Chronicles 20)

In the Word we read of the songs of David, the sons of Korah, the angel choirs, and a new song that even the angels won’t be able to sing! (Rev. 5:9, 14:3)

In the New Testament we are taught to "sing with the Spirit and with understanding." (1 Corin. 14:15) We are to sing "with grace in our hearts to the Lord." (Col. 3:16)

Isaiah said, "The LORD Jehovah is my strength and my song."

The singing of praises and use of music is forever entwined with worship to God.

2. "With my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness."

The Hebrew word for faithfulness here can be translated "firmness or security."

Those who know God need to make known the security that comes from knowing Him.

We need to tell it more - talk about it more.

Where our heart is our mouths will follow.

How often have we heard someone say, "Let me tell you about my grandchild, my car, my girfriend, my favorite hobby, etc?"

Speaking of God’s faithfulness is a recurring theme in this Psalm.

Psalm 89:2 - "For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens."

Man on earth can’t ever shake the faithfulness of God - it is established in heaven!

Psalm 89:5 - "And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints."

Psalm 89:8 - "O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?"

Psalm 89:24 - "But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted."

Pslam 89:33 - "Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail."

Praise God for His faithfulness!

3. "To all generations"

The greatest heritage you can leave to your children and grandchildren is the knowledge of God’s mercy and faithfulness.

And this Psalm is informing you that one of the great ways of accomplishing this tranformation of knowledge is through singing praise to God.

God’s people have always been a singing people.

Teach your children to sing praises to God.

Show them how by your own example.

Purchase and play good Christian music in their presence. Buy them good Christian music and encourage them to listen to praises to God on the radio, on their CD players and computers and ipods.

Uplift good Christian musicians and songwriters as heroes worthy of more respect than secular entertainment personalities.
