Seven Spheres of Influence Series (Business/Politics)

Connecting to our Culture – Part 3

Colossians 3:23-24, 4:1

Observations from the Business Sphere:

1. All of us live at least a portion of our lives in the business sphere.

2. Business is not just about a paycheck. It’s not just about benefits. You are on a self-supporting mission field.

3. The average person spends one third of their waking life in the workplace.

Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)

23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men,

24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Colossians 4:1 (NIV)

1 Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

Colossians 3:23a (NIV)

23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart…

4. Christians could revolutionize the work force if we would sincerely, intentionally, and continually, honor this biblical mandate.

Q: Why should I work at whatever I do with all my heart?

A: I give my all because I am working for the Lord, not for men.

Colossians 3:23 (NIV)

23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men,

Colossians 3:24a (NIV)

24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.

5. You will give an account for every single part of your life to the Lord.

6. Faithfulness on the job is faithfulness to your Father in heaven.

7. What you do is NOT as important as how you do it.

Colossians 3:24b (NIV)

24b It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Sphere #5 – Politics and Government.

Nearly every political issue that Christians are associated with today is from a defensive posture.

The question is not should Christians be involved in politics, but how should Christians be involved in the political sphere of American culture?

Pointers on Politics:

1. Understand the power of prayer.

2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NIV)

1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone-- 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

2. Be informed.

Decisions are made primarily based on two things:

a. The political philosophy of the candidate.

b. The constituents opinion.

3. Register and Vote.

4. Enter into the political arena yourself.

SERIES PRAYER

O God, open our eyes to see the things that are happening around us. Quicken our minds and hearts to interpret what we see so that, as You are trying to speak to us, we will always be ready to listen. — Theodore Parker Ferris
