David Faithfully Fights Evil Lesson 2 Series

A. DAVID WAS NOT OLD ENOUGH

1. Nine foot Goliath challenged the army of Israel to send warriors to fight them. “If I prevail … you shall be our servants” (1 Samuel 17:9). “All the men of Israel … fled from him … dreadfully afraid” (17:24).

2. When David volunteered, “Eliab, his oldest brother … anger … pride” (17:28).

3. Argument against David, “You are a youth” (17:33).

4. Gave David Saul’s armor. “Saul clothed David with his armor … helmet … coat of mail … David fastened his sword … tried to walk” (17:38-39).

5. There was a problem with implied solution. “I have not tested them” (17:39). So he took them off” (17:39).

B. DAVID’S PREPARATION TO FIGHT

1. Tried and proven weapons. “He took his staff … chose five smooth stones … and his sling” (17:40).

2. The enemy, Goliath began drawing near … the man who bore his shield went before him” (17:41).

3. Goliath’s challenge. “Cursed David … I will give your flesh to the birds” (17:43-44).

4. David’s defense. “You come … sword … spear … I come … in the name of the LORD of Host, the God of the armies of Israel” (17:45).

5. David’s prayer. “The LORD does not save with sword … the battle is the Lord’s … He will give you into our hands” (17:47).

6. Tools of God’s victory. “David ran … took a stone … slung it … struck the Philistine in the forehead … sank in ... fell to his face” (17:49).

7. Complete the victory. “David ran … took his sword … cut off his head.” “The Philistines saw ... and fled” (17:51). “David took the head … to Jerusalem ... put his (Goliath’s) armor in his tent” (17:54).

8. Saul got jealous. “The women … came out to meet (King Saul) with singing and dancing … Saul has slain his thousands, David his ten thousands” (18:6). “Saul eyed David from that day” (18:9).

C. TEN STEPS TO FIGHT EVIL (ONE)

1. Claim the tools of faith used to win earlier/smaller victories (1 Samuel 17:34-36).

2. Know the source of your attack. “He has defiled the armies of the living God” (17:36).

3. Depend on spiritual weapons not secular weapons (17:23-24).

4. Be aggressive. “David hurried … toward … the Philistine” (17:48).

5. Use weapons that have given victory in the past (17:40).

6. Faith is your assurance. “I come to you in the name of the LORD of Host, the God of Israel” (17:45).

7. Remember your testimony. “That all the earth my know there is a God in Israel … this assembly shall know that the LORD … saves” (17:46-47).

8. Be resolute. “David slung … struck … the stone sank in … he fell … David ran and stood over … cut off his head” (17:49-51).

9. Encourage others. “The men of Israel … shouted … pursued the Philistines” (17:52).

10. Document your victory. “David took the head … brought it to Jerusalem” (17:54). “David before Saul, the head … in his hand” (17:57).

If you have never really accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, would you do it right now? Do not delay or put it off. If you would like to receive Christ by faith, pray this simple prayer in your heart:

Dear Lord, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died for my sins on the cross, and rose again the third day. I repent of my sins. By faith I receive the Lord Jesus as my Savior. You promised to save me, and I believe You, because You are God and cannot lie. I believe right now that the Lord Jesus is my personal Savior, and that all my sins are forgiven through His precious blood. I thank You, dear Lord, for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
