AS A STRANGER IN A FOREIGN LAND

Abraham the father of faith lived his life as a stranger in a foreign land. His life was marked by Altars, Tents and Wells. Learn the spiritual truths associated with Altars, Tents and Wells.

Altars. Tents and Wells

Genesis 23:4 “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

Genesis 12:6-9 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land. Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD. So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.

Genesis 26:18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.

Romans 4:1 What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh?

Tents

1. Tents speak of temporary dwellings of pilgrimage.

1 Peter 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the pilgrims (temporary residents) of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

2. Tents speak of the willingness to be led by the Spirit.

Hebrews 11:8-10 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Numbers 14:14 “and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, LORD, are among these people; that You, LORD, are seen face to face and Your cloud stands above them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

3. Tents speak of the dwelling place of God.

Exodus 33:7 Moses took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and called it the tabernacle of meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who sought the LORD went out to the tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp.

Altars

1. Altars speak of the Divine intervention or interruption of God.

a. A change of season

b. A revelation of God

c. A prophetic moment

Genesis 12:7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

2. Altars speak of sacrifice and worship.

Deuteronomy 27:5 “And there you shall build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones; you shall not use an iron tool on them.

Isaiah 65:3 A people who provoke Me to anger continually to My face; Who sacrifice in gardens, And burn incense on altars of brick;

Genesis 11:3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.

3. Altars speak of a changed life.

Something we always remember. Building a house etc.

Wells

1. Wells speak of seeking the Lord and walking in His refreshing.

John 4:6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour

2. Wells need to be kept clean.

Song of Solomon 4:12,15 A garden enclosed Is my sister, my spouse, A spring shut up, A fountain sealed. A fountain of gardens,

A well of living waters, And streams from Lebanon.

3. Wells need to be reopened. (Flesh – Spirit)

Genesis 26:18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.
