72 hours that Rocked the World

Passion Chapters of the 4 Gospels

We need to examine all four Gospels to see the entire Passion Week story. By doing this we see the complete story of what transpired in that last 72 hours. In these hours Jesus will change the world like only He can. These last hours are both tramatic and exhilerating. These are Jesus' last hours.

Thursday

Thursday evening in the upper room Jesus is with his disciples. This is a bittersweet time for our Lord. "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you..." he said, yet at the same time he knew they would all (except John) leave him, one would betray him and one would publicly deny him. In this meal, he instituted what we call "THe Lord's Supper." In this meal he begins a New Covenant. He took the cup of Covenants, he blessed it and gave thanks, he said "This is the cup of the New and Everlasting Covenant made in my shed blood, drink it all of you." (paraphrase of Luke 22:20 fulfillment of Jeremiah 31:31).

Do we understand this when we take communion? The cup is now a cup of a New Covenant, sealed in the blood of The Lamb of God. This new Covenant is that Jesus became our sacrifical lamb, his blood would once for all time be shed for the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus knew this, he knew the pain and suffering, he knew the cost and he knew the results. He did for us. What we should do is realize he did it for each of us individually. We need to personalize this, he did it for me

Thurday:

1.He would institute the Lord's Supper

2.He would wash the feet of the disciples as an example of the servants we are to be.

3.During the meal he would reveal his betrayer

1.Judas would dip and take the bread from Jesus

2.Satan would enter Judas

3.Judas would betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver

4.Judas would be remorseful, but not repentant, and then hang himself.

4.Jesus would reveal the denial of Peter

5.They would finish the meal and go to the Garden

In the Garden

1.Jesus would ask Peter, James and John to stay awake and pray.

2.Jesus would go a little distance away and pray himself

3.His prayer was for us (John 17)

4.His prayer reveals his humaness as well as his resolve.

5.Father Not my will but your's be done.

6.Satan torments Jesus (Can 1 man pay for all the sins in the world?)

7.He sweats drops of blood.

8.The Father sends an angel to minister to him. (Luke 22:43)

9.Resolved to finish, Jesus faces his betrayer and the tormentors.

He heals the ear of Malchus (John 18:10, Luke 22:50)

Peter denies him 3x's

Jesus is tried before a prejudiced court (Matt 26:60)

Judas Hanged himself (Matt 27:5).

That was Thursday, Sunday is coming.

Friday:

1.Jesus is handed over to Pilate

2.Pilate wishes to release him, but the crowd cries out for his death.

3.Seeking to appease the crowd he has Jesus flogged

1.This is a Roman flogging, since Jesus was not a Roman citizen they can beat him all they want.

2.Historians declared Jesus was beat so bad, he was barely recognizable.

3.They mocked him, punched him out, but he never made a sound.

As a sheep before his shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth (Isaiah 53:7).

Maybe we have experienced something like this, innocent and framed, accused and condemned for doing good? Are we feeling beaten down and rejected, Jesus knows how we feel. He felt that on the Friday, but Sunday is coming.

Jesus before the crowd.

1.Pilate brings him out again Behold the man.

2.The crowd choses between Barabbas and Jesus (all four Gospels)

3.Jesus sees the crowd choose Barabbas.

4.Jesus is led away to be crucified.

Have we felt like this, rejected, passed over, seeing others succeed where it should have been us? It was Friday, some 36 hours into the 72 that would rock the world, SUNDAY IS COMING.

Jesus Crucified:

1.They led him through the streets

2.The crowd continued to torment him

3.He is condemned between two thieves

Have we ever been falsely accused? Have we ever been cast away? It was Friday, Sunday is coming.

From a human standpoint this is a horrible day. The innocent condemned. Yet, for at least one guilty man, it is a glorious day. He hears what we long to hear. “Today you shall be with me in Paradise.”

Only God can forgive sins, and on that day, for one repentant man, it was a glorious day. But the day is not yet done.

Jesus hung on that Cross for approximately 6 hours. Tortured, beaten, weakened, yet He could not die until He makes the proclamation “It is Finished” At that moment, all the sin of the world was placed upon, at the moment was His greatest grief. For the first time in all Eternity, Jesus and the Father were separated.
