1 PP SLIDE: Sermon Study 289 – WORD OF SURRENDER

Review:

1. The Word of Forgiveness , “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” He focused outward

2. The Word of Salvation “Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” He focused sideward

3. The Word of Affection Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother!” He focused parent-ward

4. The Word of Anguish “God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" He focused upward

5. The Word of Suffering “I thirst” He focused inward

6. The Word of Victory “It is finished” He focused backwards and forwards

2 PP SLIDE: Key Passage: (Saying #7) - Luke 23:46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last.” --- He focuses heavenward.

Quoting – but adding Father, -- (Psa 31:5 NIV) Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth.

Note #1: Father. That verse was the prayer every Jewish mother taught her child to say last thing at night. Just as we were taught maybe to say, ‘This night I lay me down to sleep,’ so the Jewish mother taught her child to say, before the threatening dark came down, ’Into thy hands I commit my spirit.’ Jesus made it even more lovely for he began it with the word Father. Even on the cross Jesus died like a child falling asleep in His father’s arms.”

Note #2: Jesus willingly gave His life.

John 10:17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life--only to take it up again. John 10:18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

John 19:10 "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?" John 19:11a Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.

THIS LAST STATEMENT FROM THE CROSS DEMONSTRATES FOUR NEEDS WE HAVE:

3 PP SLIDE: 1. THE NEED OF THE FATHER:

a. Rom 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

b. Gal 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, Gal 4:5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Gal 4:6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." Gal 4:7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

c. 1 John 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

4 PP SLIDE: 2. THE NEED OF HIS HANDS:

a. His hands made nature: (Psa 102:25 NIV) In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

b. His hands made us: (Psa 119:73 NIV) Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your commands.

c. His hands make miracles: (Psa 143:5 NIV) I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.

5 PP SLIDE: 3. THE NEED TO COMMIT:

a. (Prov 16:3 NIV) Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.

b. 1 Pet 4:19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

6 PP SLIDE: 4. THE NEED TO SURRENDER OUR SPIRIT:

John 4:23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

Rom 8:10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.

1 Cor 6:17 But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

1 Th 5:23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
