What Wall-E Can Teach Us About God

Introduction

Today, we are going to explore some profound spiritual truths through the lens of a beloved animated character—Wall-E. This small, diligent robot from the Disney-Pixar film "Wall-E" has a lot to teach us about perseverance, love, and restoration. Let’s dive into three key lessons that Wall-E can teach us about our relationship with God and how we live out our faith.

Point 1: Perseverance in Faith

Galatians 6:9 (NLT) - "So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up."

Paul encourages the Galatian church to remain steadfast in doing good, assuring them that their perseverance will result in a harvest of blessings.

The Greek word for "persevere" (?a??? p?????te?, kalon poiountes) signifies doing good continuously. In the movie, Wall-E continues his work of cleaning the abandoned Earth with diligence and dedication, even when it seems like a never-ending task. This mirrors our call to persevere in our faith and good works, trusting that God sees our efforts and will bless them in due time.

Like Wall-E, we may sometimes feel like our efforts are unnoticed or insignificant. However, God values our perseverance and promises that our faithfulness will not be in vain. Let’s continue to do good, knowing that our labour in the Lord is never wasted.

Rick Warren says, "Faithful servants never retire. You can retire from your career, but you will never retire from serving God."

Point 2: The Power of Love and Sacrifice

John 15:13 (NLT) - "There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends."

Jesus speaks to His disciples about the ultimate expression of love—sacrificing one’s life for others.

The Greek word for "love" (???p?, agape) represents selfless, sacrificial love. Wall-E demonstrates this kind of love through his actions, especially his willingness to protect and care for Eve, even at great personal risk. This reflects the sacrificial love that Jesus showed us, which we are called to emulate in our relationships with others.

Wall-E’s devotion to Eve, despite the dangers, mirrors the way Christ loves us and gave Himself for us. We are called to love others selflessly, putting their needs before our own and being willing to sacrifice for their well-being.

C.S. Lewis said, "To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give it to no one, not even an animal."

Point 3: Restoration and New Beginnings

Revelation 21:5 (NLT) - "And the one sitting on the throne said, 'Look, I am making everything new!' And then he said to me, 'Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.'"

John’s vision of the new heaven and new earth reveals God’s promise of complete restoration and renewal.

The Greek word for "new" (?a????, kainos) refers to something fresh and unprecedented. Wall-E’s mission ultimately leads to the restoration of Earth, symbolizing hope and new beginnings. Similarly, God promises to make all things new, bringing restoration to our lives and the world.

The transformation of Earth in Wall-E serves as a powerful reminder that no matter how broken or desolate our circumstances may seem, God has the power to restore and renew. He is always at work, bringing about new beginnings in our lives and in creation.

Max Lucado says, "God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus."

Conclusion:

Wall-E teaches us about perseverance in faith, the power of love and sacrifice, and the promise of restoration and new beginnings. As we reflect on these lessons, let’s be encouraged to persevere in our faith, love others selflessly, and trust in God’s promise of renewal.
