By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr.

This is part two of a five part series.

TEXT:

Prov. 4:23 .. Keep they heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

1 Tim. 6:5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds,

and destitute of the truth, supposing that GAIN is godliness: from such turn away?

2 Chron. 7:14 It is time we humble ourselves, fall on our knees, pray, and seek the great God, repent,

turn from our evil ways, --- we can do something about this heart problem, -----

GOD WILL HEAR US, HE WILL FORGIVE US, AND HEAL OUR LAND.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

This is part #2, THE PROBLEM OF THE HEART, DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES?

#2 of a #5 part series.

#7 Let us look at the physical heart for a minute.

**The heart is about the size of your clenched fist.

^^ It sets just to the left of the center of your chest cavity.

**The heart is a hollow, muscular organ that it’s rhythmic contractions pump

and circulate the blood through out the body.

^^ Arteries carry blood away from the heart--blood bright red.

** Veins carry the blood from the body back to the heart.

^^ There are four chambers in the heart. 2 upper Arteries chambers, two lower-ventricular.

** The heart beats on average --- 72 times a minute, 4,320 times a day, 129,600 times a month,

1,555,200 times a year, 108,864,000 times in 70 years. Every heart beat is a gift of God, and there comes a

day when your heart will quietly stop. You will give an account?

^^ Your heart pumps about +4 quarts of blood a minute, +240 qts. an hour, +5,760 qts a day,

+172,800 qts. a month, +2,073,600 qts a yr.,

+36,288,000 GALLONS in 70 yrs. Jesus’ heart pumped the most precious blood as a gift once and for all.

**The average heart weighs between 8 oz. and 12 oz.

^^The heart makes a sound something like LUB-DUB, LUB-DUB.

The lub is a longer, lower sound, as the valve closes blood comes into the heart.

The dub sound is higher and shorter in duration,

this is the sound of valves opening and the contraction of the muscle that pumps the blood.

#8 I can remember a heated discussion in Dec, 1967, during a Sunday School class.

A Doctor Christian Barnard in south Africa had performed the first successful heart transplant.

There was heated discussion whether God would allow this, for the heart is the "seat of emotions.

" Some seemed to lack the wisdom to distinguish between the four chamber heart that pumps blood

and the place where only God can clearly define.

There seemed to be a problem, rejection.

How can the body reject what is good for it?

Then the debate increased in 1982 when Doctor Jarvik implanted the first artificial

heart in Doctor Barney Clark.

Again there arose a mighty debate, mis-information and all.

Many feared sinful man living forever on mechanical hearts?

Well, many prophets doom ended up when Barney lived only 112 days.

Later William Schroeder lived 620 days on the Jarvik 7,

but the men still died even on mechanical devices.

Recently several have recented artifical hearts in Louisville,

that have extended live for a few months, but there has been no quality

of live in association with this.

May I tell you only God controls the life span of man.

Part of God’s plan after man’s fall was died must visit all.

There is a time appointed.

But often, we can see heart problems, but few can see the problems of the heart?

#9 How can we detect a heart problem?

A good doctor takes a tool called a STETHOSCOPE, and listens very carefully.

How important is listening to detect heart problems?

A good doctor can hear murmurs, and irregular heart beats.

Doctors have many other tools, EKG’s to measure electrical side of the heart beat.

ECG’s become good diagnostic tools. XRAY’s reveal enlargements.

HEART CATHERIZATION show blood flow.

CAT SCANS literally have the ability to see in the heart.

All these tools give many extra enjoyable days to those with heart trouble,

because we have DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS to reveal problems so we can correct and add days.

HOW CAN PREACHERS DIAGNOSE A HEART PROBLEM?

Maybe the old preacher can’t see the problem?

Nathan on his knees saw more than the xray could ever see of David’s heart.

He found a problem in the King’s heart by prayer.

Nathan even prepared an illustrated sermon to expose David’s heart drawn away?

David corrected his heart problem.

As Saul in anger jerked the Preacher’s coat, the Preacher (Samuel) cried for Saul,
