Summary: Here are 15 traits and characters that can help us discern.
As Christians, we are often faced with the challenge of discerning whether a spirit is from God or from the devil. The Bible provides us with guidance on how to distinguish between the two. Here are 15 traits and characters that can help us discern:
Godly Spirit:
Peaceful: A spirit sent by God promotes peace and calmness (Philippians 4:7).
Loving: It exhibits love, kindness, and compassion (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
Humility: A godly spirit is humble and submissive to God's will (James 4:6-10).
Wisdom: It imparts wisdom, discernment, and understanding (Proverbs 9:10).
Faithfulness: A spirit sent by God is faithful and reliable (Psalm 119:90).
Gentleness: It is gentle, soft-spoken, and courteous (Galatians 5:22-23).
Self-control: A godly spirit exercises self-control and restraint (Galatians 5:22-23).
Forgiveness: It promotes forgiveness, mercy, and reconciliation (Matthew 6:14-15).
Hope: A spirit sent by God inspires hope, optimism, and confidence (Romans 5:5).
Joy: It brings joy, happiness, and rejoicing (Psalm 16:11).
UnGodly Spirit (Sent by the Devil):
Chaotic: A spirit sent by the devil promotes chaos, confusion, and disorder (1 Timothy 4:1).
Hateful: It exhibits hatred, bitterness, and resentment (Matthew 15:19).
Prideful: An ungodly spirit is prideful, arrogant, and self-centered (Proverbs 16:18).
Deceptive: It is deceptive, manipulative, and dishonest (John 8:44).
Fearful: A spirit sent by the devil inspires fear, anxiety, and dread (2 Timothy 1:7).
1 John 4:1-3: "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already."
Matthew 7:15-20: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits."
By examining these traits and characters, we can discern whether a spirit is from God or from the devil. May we always seek to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and test every spirit against the Word of God.
