Summary: Instead of the demonstration of a miraculous special gift, Paul indicates our Spirit-filling can be tested by much simpler means.

1 Corinthians 12:29-30

Q: Does every believer have the role or gifts going with an apostle? Prophet? Teacher? Miracle worker? Heal? Tongues? Interpret tongue-speaking language?

A: The answer to all those questions is: “...no…” (Greek term for question with an assumed answer of "no" is used with each item; prounounced "may").

Ephesians 5:18 tells us to be filled with the Spirit; verses 19-21 give us ways to demonstrate the Spirit controls (fills) our lives. These tests are for all believers, regardless of their gifts. To try and build a Spirit-filled life, we can work on developing these traits.

We must be filled with the Holy Spirit. How?

I. By Worshipping with Christian Music (19)

A. With songs that speak to one another

1. Psalms (just as it sounds)

2. Hymns (songs of praise to God)

3. Spiritual songs (religious songs other than direct praise)

B. Building up your hearts in the Lord

II. By Being Thankful for God’s Gifts (20)

A. Can’t give self the credit for them; must be to God

B. Unworthy of them

C. Praise God for the greatness of the gift

III. By Being Submissive to One Another (21)

A. Affection for one another

B. Humility in outlook

C. Willingness to cooperate with one another

These show if you are under God’s control. A hostile attitude toward these activities shows you’re not Spirit-indwelt. Otherwise, something/someone else is controlling your life; it’s just not God.
