By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr.

TEXT:

Hebrews 12: 1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, LET US LAY ASIDE EVERY WEIGHT AND SIN WHICH DOTH SO EASILY BESET US, AND LET SO RUN WITH PATIENCE THE RACE THAT IS SET BEFORE US...

Prov. 18:21 Death and Life are in the power of the tongue: but they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man religion is in vain.

Matthew 12:36 Jesus says: That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Let us ponder Laying aside weight to attain victory.

This is the 10th in series of Remove the weights, text, Heb. 12:1

I. Remove the weight: Introduction

II. REMOVE THE WEIGHT OF SIN.

III. Remove the weight of no evaluation.

IV. Remove the weight: Blame Game.

V. Remove the weight of GREED.

VI. Remove the weight of JEALOUSY.

VII. Remove the weight of Judgmentalism.

VIII. Remove the weight of LAZINESS.

IX. Remove the weight of Bitterness.

X. Remove the weight of the Tongue.

I am wearing a backpack with 40 pounds of rock,

the first rock was labeled SIN. This rock is labeled Tongue: Speech.

I have a friend remove the one rock from my backpack,

I have painted the word Tongue /Speech on the rock.

I have SIN the biggest rock, it is a little larger than three fist,

the rest are little bigger than soft ball size.

I note my load is getting lighter as I remove the weights.

Today the 10th rock is removed.

I wear the back pack for the whole service, the load sure gets heavy.

X. REMOVE THE TERRIBLE WEIGHT OF THE TONGUE.

My last year teaching school in Lee County,Virginia, we were studying World History. We were looking at the USSR, and the great arsenal of weapons in the world’s power chest.

A girl named Tammy came to my desk and asked,

"Mr. Hughes, what is the most dangerous thing in the world?"

I ask to ponder this, and we would discuss this the next day.

I thought of the razor blade edges on swords and knifes.

I thought of guns that can shoot with deadly accuracy.

I thought of cannons that can shoot 30 miles with pin point accuracy.

I thought of bombs that could destroy whole cities.

I thought of the nuclear power that can melt the world in fervent heat.

Then I had a revelation, THE TONGUE, THE UNCONTROLLED TONGUE, IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING EVER TO EXIST.

The tongue has separated best friends.

The tongue has destroyed strong families.

The tongue has split churches and destroyed ministries.

A bitter tongue and a few sets of ears can destroy many years of great effort.

Words can make terrible nooses.

A. WORDS CAN BE A TRAP....

Text: Matthew 12:36 Jesus says: That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

1. Few men learn how important words can be.

2. We fail to guard are mouths and ears.

Once you hear something, it is much easier to speak the thought.

B. Some great men’s words...

Slander has an edge sharper than any sword,

and the tongue has more venom than all the snakes of the world.

Many would never write with a pen what they say with their tongue.

A sharp tongue is the only edged tool that grows keener with constant use.

The dog is considered man’s best friend, because he wags his tail not his tongue.

Fair words never hurt the tongue.

C. WORDS CAN RELEASE POWER.

Prov. 18:21 Death and Life are in the power of the tongue: but they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

1. As the blossom before the fruit, so words can go before the trouble.

2. Your tongue power will release life or death, your choice.

Can you see the daily choices of your words become building blocks or release destruction.

D. THE TONGUE IS SMALL, BUT RELEASES BIG THINGS...

James 3:5 Even the tongue is a little member,

and boasteth great things.

Behold how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

1.A match can be so little, but the fire it ignites can burn and destroy much property and life, so the tongue.

2. vs 6 says the tongue can defile (make dirty) the whole body.... WOW, be careful...

It is great to read God's message based on His words and not on what "society" thinks we should preach at the pulpit. It was refreshing to read a message that we should hear but are afraid to preach it because we might "offend" someone. Praise the Lord!
