Series: Jesus Is Better- The Better Apostle [#1]

THE MASTER DESIGN

Hebrews 3:1-6

Introduction:

Our text begins the 2nd section of Hebrews- Jesus is the better Apostle. This morning, we are going to see that Jesus is greater than Moses. As I preach my last Graduation sermon for one of my children, I hope that it will help each of us here. As we go through life we are either building or tearing down. As we build our lives, we need to follow the plans that God has set before us and build our lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ.

Over the last couple of years, I have had the opportunity to be a part of the building of 2 new schools. There are several factors in building a great building and a building that is useful for its purpose. These same factors affect the building of our lives.

Hebrews 3:1-6 (NIV)

“Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.”

1. Factor #1: The builder.

As the School District made plans to build 2 new schools, we first had to choose an Architect and a construction company. The process to do this was very lengthy and specific so that we would choose the right companies for the jobs.

God is the builder of all things. If you choose to not follow God’s design for your life and let others build your life, it will fail. Our text uses Moses as an example. Remember how Moses argued with God, how he made excuses of why God had the wrong person for the job? But, with God, all things are possible. God took this man that could not speak to people and used him in miraculous ways. Let us never forget Who the Master Builder is.

2. Factor #2: The building.

As we went over plans weekly, we talked about the type of materials needed, the ones responsible to make it happen, and a time frame of when it would be complete. Once the building began to be built, the construction people followed the designs and built the building. Not one time in this process did the building tell us to stop or not do it that way.

As a Christian, you are God’s house. The Holy Spirit of God lives in you. That means that you are the building, not the builder. You must allow God to build you according to His design. Fix your thoughts on Jesus.

3. Factor #3: The purpose.

As these schools were being built, we were constantly reminded of the purpose of each space. Special Education rooms were designed differently than other classrooms because its purpose was different. The gym had a different purpose than the music room. Each area needed to be prepared for its purpose.

We are no different. God calls each of us to different things. There are many different callings; but we have one central purpose- Serving God. We are told that Moses was a faithful servant of God. That means that he had no rights or “say-so”. We are to be faithful with the gifts and talents given to us by God for His benefit, not ours.

Jesus Christ is our true example of being a servant. Only through the blood of Jesus Christ do we even have purpose as a servant, for without Him we are nothing. Jesus served the Father by His faithfulness in dying on a cross and becoming a curse for us.

Conclusion:

Serving the Lord is never easy. With it comes many frustrations and heart aches, but verse 6 is so important for us to remember. Hold on to your courage and hope. Let the Master Designer continue to build your life according to His purpose and plans for your life.
