Summary: In the beginning, Satan was an angel named Lucifer. Lucifer sinned and was cast out of Heaven. We next see him in the Garden of Eden as the serpent.

**********

Lucifer was Satan’s original name when he was an angel.

He was full of wisdom and perfect in beautiful.

1. Anointed Cherub

O Lucifer, son of the morning! Isaiah 14:12

The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

“Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus (represents Satan)

and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says;

Seal up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

You have been in Eden the garden of God;

You were covered with every precious stone,

the sardius, topaz, and the diamond,

the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper,

the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold:

The workmanship of your tabrets and of your pipes was prepared in you

in the day that you were created.

“You are the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set you so:

You were on the holy mountain of God;

You have walked up and down in the middle of the stones of fire.

You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created… Ezekiel 28:11-15

**********

Lucifer sinned because of his beauty.

He wanted to be exalted on a throne.

He wanted to be “like God.” He wanted to be “like the most High.”

2. Sinned

-- The devil sinned from the beginning. 1 John 3:8

-- Iniquity was found in you.

By the multitude of your merchandise they have filled the middle of you with violence,

and you have sinned…

Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty,

You have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness…

You have defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude of your iniquities,

by the iniquity of your traffic… Ezekiel 28:15-18

O Lucifer, son of the morning!

You have said in your heart,

“I will ascend into heaven,

I will exalt my throne above the stars of God:

I will also sit on the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;

I will be like God, the most High.” Isaiah 14:12-16

Because he sinned, Lucifer was cast out of Heaven. And his angels were cast out with him.

3. Cast Out of Heaven

There was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and did not prevail, neither was their place found any more in heaven. The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceives the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:7-9

In Revelation 12:9, we are given the following terms and names for the fallen angel Lucifer:

— the dragon

— the serpent

— the Devil

— Satan

the Devil, and Satan.

Rejoice, heavens, and those who dwell in them.

Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea,

because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath,

because he knows that he has but a short time. Revelation 12:12

Jesus said, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." Luke 10:18

…Therefore, I will cast you out of the mountain of God as profane:

and I will destroy you, O covering cherub, from the middle of the stones of fire. Ezekiel 28:16

4. Lucifer’s Angels Were Cast Out with Him.

Lucifer had corrupted other angels, and they were cast out of Heaven also.

— …He (Satan) was cast out (of Heaven) into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:9

— The dragon’s tail drew the third part of the stars (angels) of heaven and cast them to the earth. Revelation 12:4

— The dragon and his angels fought but didn’t prevail. Their place wasn’t found in heaven any more. Revelation 12:7-8

**********

In the beginning of the history of mankind, we first see Satan as the serpent in the Garden of Eden.

In the Garden of Eden

1. Satan Tempted Eve

Genesis 3:1-6

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.

The serpent said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?’” (The serpent questioned God's Word.)

The serpent said, “You will not surely die.” (The serpent denied God’s Word.)

The serpent said, “God knows that in the day you eat of it (the forbidden fruit), your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (The serpent contradicted God's Word and twisted the truth. Yes! When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they knew good from evil. But it wasn’t the good thing that Satan made Eve think it would be.)
