Don't Forget Jesus This Christmas Series

LUKE 2

In Luke 2, we read the story of when Mary and Joseph lost Jesus. You can say they have a parenting problem. They were given the Son of God to look after and they lost Him. It took them four days before they found Him in the Temple and what He was doing fascinate them.

Did you know it is possible to lose God at Christmas?

Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year. And as time goes by, it’s easy to come to think of it less as a joyful celebration of God’s greatest gift to human kind and more as a time of physical and financial stress.

All the parties, all those gifts, all baking and decoration can make us so busy and stress that we forget the True meaning of Christmas.

When I am with my granddaughter Jade RoSeMary, I have to keep my eye on her all the time, because she does not necessarily have her eye on me, and it is easy to quickly lose sight of her.

Sometimes we lose sight of God. And during Christmas we can easily do that. But here is the good news: God never loses sight of us.

1. Immanuel means “God is with us.”

He is always watching you. He is always caring for you, even when you have lost sight of Him. Remember during this festive season that God is the True Reason for the Season.

2. The incarnation is an amazing thing to contemplate.

Just think: the Almighty Creator of all things, with unlimited strength and power, chose to be dependent on a mother for His nourishment and nurture. He was deity in diapers; that’s mind-blowing.

3. How we spend our time is based on choices.

Like victims, we may claim to be too busy or that we just don’t have time for spiritual things. But we must choose to make time for the important things. Jesus told Martha, “Dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41–42 NLT).

Conclusion

• You can attend church every Sabbath and still lose sight of Jesus.

• It isn’t God who is lost—it is you. But Jesus said He came to seek that which is lost.

Mary and Joseph lost sight of Jesus and only realized it after time had passed. In the same way, when we lose sight of Jesus it happens over a period of time. Have you lost Jesus? Go back to where you lost Him. As Jesus told the church of Ephesus, you need to remember from where you have fallen, repent, and do the first works of your first love.

Remember. Repent. Repeat.
