Title: Conquering Sin
Theme: We can conquer the sin issue, overcoming sin that is setting at the door.
Text: Genesis 4:3 - 7
Note: This message was preached at a special service. People were encouraged to invite the lost.
Welcome, welcome. We are glad you are here. Around you, you will find regular people who are broken, needy but found hope, grace and forgiveness in Christ Jesus. Not one person here is here to judge you but we are just people who love to gather and worship God. We are going to have a great time of fellowship and food today.
Just before that can I share with you a message.
Genesis 4:3-7 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD. (4) Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, (5) but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. (6) So the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? (7) If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it."
Introduction
The first three chapters of the book of Genesis (known as the book of beginnings) answers a lot of questions. Questions that I think we often ask. First let me remind you that there is nothing wrong with questions, as long as we are willing to hear the answers.
But look at the questions that are answered in Genesis
- God –“Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God”. – From the beginning God excited. He is the Apha and Omega – the beginning and the end. Always was and always will be. There is an assumption of God.
- Creation – “how did this get here” - Looking around you, you see that there has to be an intelligent design. This all could not have been made by accident or random particles just coming together. This park itself is a prime example of a designer.
- Man’s Purpose – to have dominion. This is more than rule but more about order. God calls man to bring order into this world. To bring the kingdom order
Identity – “Who am I?”
Purpose – “Why am I here?” to bring the kingdom of God into this world
Assignment – “What am I doing right now?”
- Sin – Adam and Eve fell in the garden. The perfect place, the perfect environment. This is where sin came from. It came from:
• Disobedience
• Rebellion
• Distraction
• Breaking of the laws, ways of God
- Redemption
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."
God says although they fell, He is not done. This failure, this sin is not the end. The scripture here is interesting.
Satan will try to take you out by biting your heel.
• Heel of addiction
• Heel of hurt
• Heel of sin
• Heel of being “out of control”
But God said you can (shall have the ability to) crush His head. You don’t let Him control you.
Satan is crushed under our feet:
Romans 16:20 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
- Finally, Grace, relationship with God
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Back to the verse, your choice
Genesis 4:7, “sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it."
Sin – anything we do, say or think that breaks the heart (ways of God)
All have sinned, “Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
There is a penalty for sin, “Romans 6:23 for the wags of sin is death”
But God makes a provision for sin in His Son Jesus Christ, “Romans for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life.”
Sins location - Lies – lurks, crouches,
“Has a desire for you” – it wants you
“You should rule over it”
God’s promise before you ever knew Him and while you were in your sin,
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Our role, Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
