Summary: Making spiritual application of the music of Elvis Presley

The Eternal Side of Elvis.

A BIG HUNK OF LOVE

"Hey baby, I ain’t asking much of you

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, baby

I ain’t asking much of you

Just a big-a big-a big-s hunk of love will do."

I. Backdrop.

This was a million-selling hit song for Elvis from 1959, "A Big Hunk O’ Love"! It was written by Sid Wyche, Aaron Schroeder. It was actually recorded on June 10, 1958. This was one of those songs where even a baptist foot might start to keep pace. If you listen to the words a smile just might come to your face - "You’re just a natural-born beehive, filled with honey to the top. But I ain’t greedy baby, all I want is all you got."

It was released after Elvis had joined the army and instantly became a favorite. It was a song that he enjoyed singing on stage even in his later years.

II. Backstage.

I guess we are all hungering for a Big Hunk of Love. But the question is from who? Elvis apparently drew much love from his mother. But she died. Elvis once said, "We were an affectionate family. My mother was the most wonderful person in the world. I always felt a little bit lonely --- maybe a better word would be ’incomplete’ --- when I was little. But I could tell my mother about it, how I felt and then the feeling would go away. I suppose it might have been different if my brother had lived. But he didn’t live, and I grew up alone. I guess my mother --- and my father, too, of course -- were trying to make up for that by giving me enough love for both."

As we go through life we soon learn that there is really only one person who can give us that hunk of love we are craving for. That Person is God Himself! He not only has a big hunk of love but an infinite unending hunk of love for you.

Most do not experience that love today because sin has blocked the flow - but the good news we share is this: "16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16

He died for you and offers you a pardon and imputed righteousness, if you will just admit that you are a sinner and place your total trust in Jesus Christ substitutionary death. Receive that big hunk of love and you will begin to experience it in ever increasing dosages.

Did Elvis come to receive the loving Lord Jesus Christ? Only God knows for sure, but if you go to my web site [StrugglingThrScriptures.ning.com] and look under Video, you will see the "He Touched Me" videos. Sadly many today make an idol out of Elvis, and God hates idolatry. But I don’t think it’s fair to blame Elvis for that.

Jerry Schilling told the story that some girls had a long sign they rasied stating that Elvis was the King. Elvis stopped the concert and stated that Jesus Christ was the king and had the ladies sit down.

Elvis last concert, he spoke these appropriate words, that was in 1977, "Til we meet you again, may God bless you. Adios."

The more important question is, have you had a personal life-changing encounter, with Jesus Christ? If not, why not now:

"Lord Jesus, I need You. I cannot save myself or even help you save me. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. The best I know how, I right now open the door of my life and receive you as my Savior. Come in and make me the kind of person you want me to be.

Thank You for forgiving me my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life." In Jesus name, Amen.
