Today we begin a new series in the book of Lamentations. So few people read and study this amazing book written by Jeremiah after the fall of Jerusalem and Judah. It is a sad book dealing with the nation’s sorrow and sin that caused it. It is most informative.

Jeremiah is faced with the scene of destruction all around and he describes different events and how they affected people and material things. When people turn from God, the inevitable must happen, and that is God’s judgement upon the existing order.

Jeremiah continues to list Judah’s losses after the Babylonian invasion. All her precious things have gone; the nation is exposed in shameful defeat; the Temple which was sacred was stripped by Babylon, even the holy of holies violated.

This section begins the lament – the utterance of sadness and failure. There are 9 verses of lament here and this Part deals with 2 of them. Was the LORD responsible for Judah’s suffering? It is a sad thing but sinfulness always brings misery and suffering upon the participants.

5. The Book Of Lamentations – Part 5 – Desolate Pleading Hands As I Admit My Own Guilt- – Chapter 1:16-20

There are 5 more separate laments here. The survivors are desolate and can find none to help or comfort. The nation admits its guilt and isolation as Judah was forsaken. The heart of the people was overturned as was God who had to do this. (Don't dismiss because it is Lamentations).

What happened to Judah long ago has ramifications for us today. No one can walk over the Jewish people and be guiltless. Those who rejoice over Israel's suffering will be held accountable. Judah laments its desolation and groans in rejection.

Jeremiah attributes all the destruction in Judah to the LORD’S action against the nation, yet they themselves are responsible because of their perverted idolatry. This was done in fierce anger as described. The Lord’s judgement against sin will have a future component.

The LORD is blamed for the destruction of Judah and the Temple and the wall and gates, but it was brought about by the people’s gross s in. Today's verses see destruction God allowed in His permissive will. So much sin today is “allowed” by God in this age of grace, but a reckoning to come.

Jeremiah recounts what he is seeing in the aftermath of the Babylonian destruction. The elders regret their sin. Mankind is a vile picture of inhumanity and lack of compassion, and that confronted Jeremiah. Babies were suffering and dying. The prophet was greatly stressed and overcome.

The enemy mocking and hissing at a defeated and downtrodden people was the delight of passers-by, but persecuted Christians suffer that today increasingly. It’s an ugly world when sin is in control. Wickedness these days is galloping. Do not oppose the Jew or Israel.
