The story of the boy Samuel provides clues to hear more clearly from God: we need to cultivate our environment, obey with what we do know God wants, and listen with a servant's heart. In doing so, we set ourselves up to be better listeners and obeyers.

The amazing story of Jonah reminds us: 1) Don't run from God, 2) When life gets you down, look up, 3) Respond to God's second chance, and 4) Get God's heart for people. Like Jonah, we need to give up the "reluctant prophet" role and stay in God's will.

Too many people say they speak for God. How can you know who really is? The occult is not the answer. God through Moses gives us two tests for discerning real prophets from false ones. And we find that Jesus is the greatest prophet of all!

Isaiah speaks to us in the exile of our fears, our anxieties, our worries, and he says, God is great--he is bigger than our problems. God is good--he is tuned into my concerns. And I can put all of my hope in the Lord, knowing he will come through.

Change or transition is hard, but we can face it bravely and powerfully with God's help. The transition in leadership from Elijah to Elisha reminds us to pay attention, to seek the Holy Spirit's filling, and to bravely take up the task given us.
