It’s as if Jesus gives them permission to arrest Him. One comment here to put it beautifully, “They came to arrest Jesus. They didn’t arrest Jesus. Jesus arrested them.”

Americans have a separation of powers in our republic, but this was not the case with Roman law. Caesar placed his all-powerful rule in the hands of the governor, who had Rome’s full authority to execute someone.
