"What we value speaks volumes about us. When the oil industry got going, gasoline was a curious side-product. It wasn’t good for much. When auto pioneers worked on developing engines, they would buy gasoline by the quart from the pharmacy. Now, we fight wars over oil fields; we value what once was despised. The Europeans, by and large, believe that whether God exists or not is irrelevant to life. But even God’s people can put other things ahead of God, and while not saying that God is irrelevant, they really think that He is less relevant than the sorts of things Jeremiah mentions."
