Cups of the Lord

Cup of Salvation

Psalms 116:13 says, “I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.” The opening verse of psalm 116 says, “I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.” (Psalm 116:1)

Dewight Jones tells us that there are some 32 cups mentioned in the Word of God. We have already looked at “The Cup of Wrath,” let us now consider “The Cup of Salvation.”

The word “cup” is often used figuratively in the Bible for that which is portioned out and of which one is to partake. Jesus used the word “cup” in reference to the suffering He was to partake for the sins of the world. His willful partaking in “The Cup of Suffering” enables all repentant sinners to partake in “The Cup of Salvation.” They only way of going to heaven and enjoying all the benefits of the gospel here in this life is by accepting Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

This great salvation, offered to every person, provides several key truths for those who repentant: 1.) Assurance: The Body of Christ is a blood-purchased church. Jesus said He will not loose those who His Father has given Him. (John 6:37-40); 2.) Joy: There is an unspeakable joy that is clothed upon those who live out their faith in Christ. (Ps. 132:16); 3.) Seasons of Refreshing: As long as the child of God allows the Holy Spirit to work in his spiritual heart through the washing of the Word of God, there will be seasons of refreshing. (Acts 3:19-23) 4.) Change of Masters: When a man comes to Christ he is no longer bound by sin and its life-debilitating hold. He can choose now to obey the Lord, whereas, before salvation he could not (Romans 6:17-18); 5.) Abundant Life: The child of God will be given all he needs for service unto the Lord, all he needs for communion with God, Christ, and for walking in step with the Holy Spirit; 6.) Separation Unto God: The child of God is promised the Holy Spirit for his sanctification, literally being set apart for special works with the Lord Jesus. Lastly; 7.) Salvation to the Uttermost: Jesus saves repentant sinners from all bondages that they had gotten themselves into. Although it is true that there are those who claim the name of Christ and yet whose lives reflect a life under sin’s dominion, this does not wipe out the witness of the multitudes who truly strive for the righteousness of God. These get a supernatural cleansing and empowerment to become overcomers. They can truly sing from the heart, “Victory in Jesus!”

We do not know for sure who wrote Psalm 116, but we do know that he fully understood that the “Lord [had] delivered [his] soul from death, [his] eyes from tears and [his] feet from stumbling…” (Psalm 116:8) The writer of this wonderful song of praise was led of the Holy Spirit, and his inspiration should be in the heart of every child of God. For he writes “How can I repay the Lord for all His goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.” (Psalms 116: 12-14)

Do you partake in “The Cup of Salvation?” Have you called upon Jesus Christ for forgiveness and salvation? Does your life reflect a lifestyle that is surrendered to the Lordship of Christ? If not, then surrender to Him today!
