D. L. Moody preached one Sunday night in Chicago. He asked the congregation to think about the message a week and come back. That night Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over the lantern and the great Chicago fire ensued. Hundreds of people died. Moody resolved never again to have a service without giving an invitation.
