Mark Twain, el escritor norteamericano que nos diera Tom Sawyer y Huckleberry Finn, escribió una vez una carta abierta al Comodoro Vanderbilt:
¡Pobre Vanderbilt! ¡Qué lástima me das! Y lo digo honestamente. Eres un hombre viejo y deberías descansar, pero sigues luchando y negándote a ti mismo, robándote del sueño reparador y de la paz mental, porque necesitas dinero desesperadamente. Siempre me da pena ver a un hombre tan pobre como tu. No me mal interpretes, Vanderbilt. Yo se que tienes 70 millones de dólares; pero tu y yo sabemos que no es lo que un hombre tiene lo que lo hace rico. No, es el estar satisfecho con lo que uno tiene, eso es ser rico. Mientras uno necesite desesperadamente una cantidad adicional, ese hombre no es rico. Setenta veces setenta millones de dólares no lo pueden hacer rico, mientras su pobre corazón desee más. Soy lo suficientemente rico como para comprar el más barato de los caballos de tus establos, quizás, pero no puedo sincera y honestamente jurar que necesito otro caballo ahora mismo.
