Asbury sufrió una indisposición tras otra, tanto que un biógrafo le llamó a él, “Job a caballo.” Migrañas le plagaron a través de su vida, y infecciones crónicas de garganta eran a veces tan severas que los médicos temían que se estrangulara. Él luchó con malaria, asma, reumatismo, fiebres altas, y otras enfermedades, y a medio de sus cuarenta él siguió adelante, convencido que no iba a durar un año más. Pero, llegó a la edad de setenta y un años.
Aquí, me gustaría contar una historia, pero no parece tener nada que ver con su enfermedad. Sin embargo, puede tener mucho que ver con el hecho que él podría sufrir tanto y seguir adelante. Él tenía fama de siempre dar gracias a Dios aun cuando la situación era pésima. Muchas veces comen-zaba sus oraciones con, “Señor, te damos gracias por ....” Un día, él y su compañero de viaje habían cabalgado todo el día en lluvia al punto de congelarse para llegar a una pequeña aldea fronteriza. Habían hecho desvíos alrededor de árboles caídos y derrumbes, y al fin llegaron a la aldea en la oscu-ridad, medio congelados, hambrientos, y extremadamente cansados. Para peor, nadie estaba reunido para el encuentro. Asbury y su compañero tenían que salir en direcciones opuestos en busca de algu-nos feligreses en sus granjas para reunir a algunos pocos. Al comenzar la reunión con el grupo pe-queño, el compañero pensó, “Ahora quiero ver por que motivo va a dar gracias.” Al orar Asbury, terminó con estas palabras, “Y Señor, te damos gracias que no todos los días son como este.”
