Sugging & Frugging: Have you been receiving phone calls asking you to participate in a survey? It’s quite likely you were the victim of Sugging (Selling under the guise of research) or Frugging (Fundraising under the guise of research), where telemarketers ask a few obligatory questions prior to making their pitch. In response, the FTC has recently amended its rules making it a violation of the Telemarketing Rule to ‘misrepresent, either directly or by implication’ any material information such as the ‘nature, purpose or mission of any entity on behalf of which a charitable contribution is being requested.’ These practices are banned in Canada as well.
