Republican Churchgoers: According to new Pew Research Center data, evangelical Protestants have shifted toward the Republican Party over the past 15 years. In ‘87 and ‘88, white evangelical Protestants were split fairly evenly (34% Republicans, 31% Democrats). Today, Republicans have a nearly two-to-one advantage (43%-22%). The survey also revealed a growing number of Americans see themselves as “born-again or evangelical” Christians. In the late ‘80s, 41% of Protestants and 24% of the general population identified themselves in that way. Today, 54% of Protestants and 30% of the population overall describe themselves as “born-again or evangelical” Christians. (Pastor’s Weekly Briefing 1/2/04)
