We must be careful not to gather around us Bible teachers who will tickle our ears, teaching us what we want to hear, or seeking out ‘Great speakers’.

No one has done this to me yet but I heard about the little boy who went up to the preacher at the end of the service and gave him a £5 note. The preacher said “Thank you, but why are you giving it to me boy?” The reply, “Because my Dad says you are the poorest preacher he’s ever heard, that’s why!”

The fact is that a so-called ‘poor speaker’ such as Moses (he often got tongue-tied and did not know what to say), or an unimpressive preacher such as Paul – they could well be the ones that God wants us to listen to!
