I remember as a child, my brother, sister and I used to ‘play house’ outside. Dad had built us a playhouse and we spent many days out there. Like most kids who would play house always had to make something to eat – right?
So there we would go. Gotta have a little water to mix in with that dirt – steak, brownies, cake, meatloaf, cookies – whatever we wanted it to be.
Then we needed a salad – leaves off the trees, blades of grass, and it needed some color so a little dandelion flower for color. And we ALWAYS had ‘green beans’ – dandelion stems broken in inch pieces.
Did we really eat this stuff? NO WAY! But it did represent a wonderful dinner prepared for whomever we wanted and represented whatever food we wanted. And it would always taste wonderful.
As we come to the Lord’s Table, we have the bread and the juice. Elements prepared for a special people, representing a special person. These elements are prepared for the children of God, representing the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Do they ‘become’ his body and blood? No. But they do represent and serve as a reminder to us of the body that He gave and the blood that was shed for the substitutionary death of our Lord...
