Rudy: Notre Dame

Are we living life with no heart of compassion and little action? There is a movie called RUDY. RUDY RUETTIGER was a man of little talents. BUT HE LIVED WITH HIS HEART. RUDY got a job at NOTRE DAME as a groundskeeper. RUDY wanted to play football for NOTRE DAME but he had little sports talent. He was small for football. At best he weighed 165 pounds. He was only 5 feet 6 inches tall. It appeared RUDY DID NOT HAVE THE SKILLS TO PLAY IN THE BIG LEAGUE OF MAJOR FOOTBALL TEAMS. Later RUDY enrolled as a student at NOTRE DAME with the dream of playing for the Fighting Irish. He tried out for the team several times. HE WAS REJECTED because of his size and lack of football experience. RUDY would not give up. Finally he made the team’s practice squad. He would not be able to DRESS OUT.

But he never missed practice with the team. He got bruised up and banged around every day. Rudy was not allowed to dress in the game uniforms and wear the GOLD HELMET. RUDY had one thing going for him. He was happy to practice with the team. RUDY HAD A BIG HEART! Now Rudy was a senior in college. Several players and coaches had noted “RUDY’S FAITHFULNESS AND EFFORT FOR THE TEAM.” It was the last game of the season. RUDY WAS ALLOWED TO DRESS OUT AND STAND ON THE SIDE LINE. There was just a few seconds left in the game. The team and the crowd started yelling “RUDY, RUDY!” So what would it hurt ,Notre Dame was winning? RUDY PRACTICED THOUSANDS OF HOURS. His day came. They allowed RUDY TO WEAR the GAME DAY GEAR. So the coach allowed RUDY to go out on the field to play. RUDY was in for one play. GUESS WHAT? Rudy tackled the opposing team’s quarterback and thus RUDY MADE IT INTO THE RECORD BOOKS: ONE PLAY --- ONE TACKLE. RUDY BECAME A HERO. HIS TEAM CARRIED HIM OFF THE FIELD. EVERYONE ON CAMPUS KNEW RUDY THE PRACTICE PLAYER. PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON INVITED RUDY TO THE WHITE HOUSE. In 1993 they made a movie about the practice boy! All because he never gave up. RUDY PLAYED WITH ALL HIS HEART.
