In the 1730s and 1740s, revivals swept across England and the American colonies during what we call “The First Great Awakening.” John Wesley saw thousands of folks claim salvation, but some of them fell back into their old ways of drinking at the local pub every night or neglecting to read God’s Word and pray. We find this entry in his journal (1763): “Many are convinced of sin, and some truly converted; yet after a season they return like the dog to his vomit.”

Does that sound familiar? Like it came right out of 2 Peter 2?

John Wesley found that accountability in small groups helped the vast majority of those new converts keep walking with Jesus day after day. It’s hard for us to imagine sitting in a room with folks we know, talking about things like: How is your soul? What sins have you committed this week? Are you keeping the means of grace – like the study of Scripture and prayer? Btw – these class meetings were MANDATORY for Methodists. You see, Wesley desired to protect the Methodists, just as Peter and Jude wanted to protect the house churches they warned about these false teachers.
