The One Question I Didn't Want To Hear
Contributed by Austin W. Duncan on Apr 18, 2026 (message contributor)
Before my second senior year at Texas Tech I interned as a graphic designer at a church in Las Vegas. A close family friend named Jud Wilhite was the senior pastor there, and he had offered me an internship during a family trip. Well, several years after that internship, I had kept in touch with him somewhat, but I had reached a point where all I could think about was getting into the church. Day after day that was the only thing on my mind. Eventually it grew into the somewhat naive conclusion that I was probably just supposed to be a senior pastor. Just like that. So one day I called Jud and told him the great news. I thought I was called to be a senior pastor. What did he think?
After telling me he thought it was great that I wanted to serve Christ and spend my life in the church, he said he had one question for me.
"What are you doing right now to share God with others in your own ministry at work?"
The one question I did not want to be asked.
I didn't have a great answer. But in one sentence, it completely changed my thought process. He was right. What was I doing to share Christ with others? The answer was nothing. I was waiting for some dramatic, specific call to arrive before I started living like the Great Commission applied to me. I wanted the lightning bolt, the big moment, the clear sign. And Jud just quietly pointed out that the call was already there. Jesus didn't say "follow me and I'll eventually show you what to do." He said, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." The call came with the following.
I get to ask you the same question now. What are you doing right now to share God with others in your own ministry?
