Grandpa, the Genius

It certainly looked like this would be a terrible day!

You see, I was providing my grandfatherly childcare to my grandson Dawson, who was probably 5 years old at the time. He loved bowling, but like most five-year-olds, he became extremely and easily bored.

It was a rainy day, so we could not go outside. I had very little in the way of toys and did not like video games, so I tried to think of something we could do that he would enjoy. Downstairs, I had been painting, so I had a lot of masking tape I had to get rid of, so I had one of those “Albert Einstein” moments.

“Come on, Dawson, I’ve got an idea for something we can do.

“What are we going to do, grandpa?” Dawson asked.

“You’ll see,” I said, smiling down at my curious grandson.

We collected the masking tape and began to ball it up into as large a ball as we could. I let him hold it, then we made our way to the recycle bin. I asked him to count out 10 plastic water bottles. He had no sooner started when he turned around, smiled a possum-like grin, and said, “Pawpaw, you’re a genius!”

After collecting ten bottles, we proceeded downstairs and made a bowling lane on the concrete floor of the garage. What a great day! Spending some quality time together and learning a valuable life lesson.

Kids are not as dumb as we think. What may have taken adults a while to grasp, my 5-year-old grandson got the message right away!
