The Donkey That Spoke

My name? Oh, I’m Sassy—the braying donkey.

Not the fastest, not the strongest… and definitely not the prettiest.

But I’ve got a good heart — and a loud voice!

(pause)

Most days I carry my master, Balaam.

He’s a prophet—important and proud.

I don’t mind. I’m used to carrying heavy loads.

But one morning, something felt… wrong.

Balaam came out angry, yanking my reins.

We were headed to see some men who didn’t love God.

Even my hooves could tell this trip wasn’t blessed.

Then—boom!

Right in the road stood a glowing angel,

sword shining like fire!

I gasped—“EE-AW!”—and ran into a field.

But Balaam didn’t see the angel.

He only saw me running off.

He shouted—and whack! He hit me!

We tried again, down a narrow lane.

The angel appeared again!

I squeezed close to the wall,

and—oops!—scraped Balaam’s foot.

He hollered and hit me again!

Then came the tightest spot yet—

no room on either side—

and there stood the angel, sword raised high!

I froze… and dropped to the ground.

Balaam lost his temper.

He yelled, lifted his stick—

and that’s when God gave me words!

“Why are you beating me?

Have I ever been a bad donkey to you?”

Balaam blinked. “Well… no.”

Then God opened his eyes.

He saw the angel, sword still gleaming!

And the angel said,

“If your donkey hadn’t stopped, you’d be dead.”

Balaam said he was sorry.

I just brayed a little—“Ee-aw.”

That night, munching my hay, I smiled.

I didn’t carry a king…

but I did speak for God and save a life.

So when folks laugh and say,

“Sassy, you’re just a donkey,”

I grin my biggest grin.

Because I know something they don’t—

I once spoke for God.

And that makes me

the happiest donkey that ever brayed. (big joyful bray — “EE-AW!”)

You don’t have to be big or brave for God to use you.

Just be willing to listen—and speak when He says, “Go.”
