Son Of Sam Serial Killer Is Now A Servant Of God
Contributed by Dr. Larry Petton on Mar 25, 2024 (message contributor)
The story of David Berkowitz, infamously known as the “Son of Sam,” is a remarkable tale of redemption and transformation.
1. Background: In the late 1970s, David Berkowitz terrorized New York City as a serial killer. He shot and killed six young people and wounded seven others during a spree that lasted from 1976 to 1977. Berkowitz claimed that a neighbor’s dog named Sam communicated with him and instructed him to commit these heinous acts. This led to his nickname, “Son of Sam.”
2. Conversion to Christianity: While serving his life sentences in prison, something extraordinary happened. David Berkowitz encountered the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. He underwent a radical transformation, turning away from darkness and embracing the light of Christ. He became a born-again Christian.
3. New Identity: “Son of Hope”: Berkowitz now prefers to be called the “Son of Hope” instead of the infamous “Son of Sam.” His heart, soul, and mind were set free by Jesus, and he found forgiveness for his past crimes.
4. Active Faith Behind Bars: Berkowitz converted from Judaism to Jews for Jesus while incarcerated.
He actively participates in prison ministry and serves as an assistant to the prison minister. His life now reflects hope, grace, and the power of God’s forgiveness.
5. A Changed Perspective: In interviews, Berkowitz expressed deep remorse for his actions during the Son of Sam killings. He no longer recognizes the person he once was. He acknowledges that “Son of Sam” represents evil and satanic things. Berkowitz believes that God spared his life for a purpose—to share the message of redemption and transformation.
6. Testimony of God’s Miracles: Berkowitz wants people to see that God is a God of miracles. If God can save someone like him, He can save anyone. His life serves as a powerful testimony to the transformative work of Jesus.
David Berkowitz’s conversion to Christianity and his subsequent ministry within the prison walls demonstrate the profound impact of God’s grace and forgiveness. His story reminds us that no one is beyond redemption, and God’s love can reach even the darkest places.
Because of Jesus....there is hope for the vilest sinner.
