Ephesians teaches us that God's saving grace was authored 'before the foundation of the world' and that those who have come to faith in Christ have been granted 'every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.' It is no mistake that the first half of the book focuses almost exclusively on the riches of our undeserved salvation, and reminds us that this gift of eternal life comes 'by grace' alone, 'through faith' alone, 'so that no one may boast'. The only exhortation in the first three chapters is that we 'remember' the grace of God in the gospel. Yet, the book doesn't close there. In chapters 4-6 we go on to discover that true joy is found in the obedience that comes from sincere faith. Paul calls this maturation process 'growing up into him who is our head,' and exhorts all believers to be 'imitators of God as his beloved children.' In other words, we learn that obedience is not the path to salvation, rather it is the inevitable result of a soul that has already been redeemed.
