About Riley
  • Education: High School: Lawrence County High, Moulton, Alabama Undergrad:(BA Biblical Studies, 2000) Heritage Christian University, Florence, AL Graduate: Working on finishing my MDiv at Lipscomb University in Nashville.
  • Experience: I served in the U.S. Army from 88-92 in Seoul, South Korea and Fort Polk Louisiana. I worked in various managerial capacities for The Decatur Daily Newspaper from 92-97. I went to HCU in 97 where I earned my BA in Biblical Studies. While at HCU I began working full time as a youth minister. In 99 I went to work as the full time preaching minister for the East Colbert Church of Christ. I have been with Sterling Boulevard since Jan. 2001.
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: Gospel of Luke series really helped me to see Christ more clearly.
  • Family: I am married to the former Juliane E. Kirk of Dothan, Alabama. We have been married for 11 1/2 years. We have two children: Kirk is 4 1/2 and Wilson is almost 2. I am originally from Moulton, Alabama.
  • What my parents think of my sermons: They love it - of course!
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: It is hard to say. She always says she likes them, but I never can get her to give me any criticism.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: Preach expositorily - and - don’t do the church’s work for them. Be a preacher and teacher of God’s word - not a pastor - let the elders do the pastoring - that is their task.
  • Books that have had an impact: Rubel Shelly: "I Just Want to be a Christian" Max Lucado: "In the Grip of Grace" Richard Hughes: "Reviving the Ancient Faith" Tom Olbricht: "Hearing God’s Voice" Foster, et al: "The Crux of the Matter" Percy: "Lanterns on the Levee"
  • Hobbies: I love history! I love to read about history and do historical research - particularly about American religious history. I also love to fish!

Satan is no different today than he has ever been; the nature of temptation and sin is really no different. Christians can better fight against evil by going back to Genesis and discovering how Satan operates.

Satan’s Tactics Do you ever get the feeling that Satan has changed? When I look at how evil our world has become and consider the temptations that people are faced with, I am tempted to say that Satan has changed. I’m tempted to say that the nature of sin has changed. Sometimes it ...read more

We must break down the walls of racial, cultural, and traditional division in the Lord’s Church.

The following is an excerpt from a sermon preached by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1956, entitled: PAUL’S LETTER TO AMERICAN CHRISTIANS. In this sermon, Dr. King reads a fictitious letter written by himself, but he presents it as if it were a lost letter of the Apostle Paul to the ...read more
