About Mike
  • Education: Bachelors in Bible, Music, and Social Science - Cascade College
  • Experience: 20-some-odd-years with many areas: youth, worship, college, young adults, and preaching.
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: I tend to begin with a story to make us think and then dive into the text. I exegete the text and then apply it to us. My context is the Churches of Christ in the Restoration Movement so a lot of my application is to remind us that we are trying to get back to the Bible but we are also sinners in need of grace and we may not get everything right, so let us love everyone.
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: Anything I've heard from David Young at North Boulevard has inspired me.
  • One of my favorite illustrations: Talking about anything historical that really happened.
  • Family: Married with 2 adult college aged children.
  • What my parents think of my sermons: My dad listens to me preach every week online. He says he thinks I am doing a wonderful job. I wish my mother was still alive to hear me preach and see where I am today in ministry.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: She told me recently that she does like my preaching. When I probed and said, "You have to say that." She said, "Yes, but I really do actually like your sermons."
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: Preach what you need to hear yourself. They don't care what you know unless they know that you care.
  • Books that have had an impact: New Day by David M. Young; Crazy Love by Francis Chan
  • Hobbies: Reading, drawing, playing the bassoon, watching television and movies
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: I talked about Jesus pointing down the "bench" (like a basketball team bench) to call us to get in the game. But what I said was, "When Jesus gives you the finger...." I almost lost it and laughed really hard. Very embarrassing. But, I don't know, Jesus may be giving some of us the finger...
  • What I want on my tombstone: Beloved disciple of Jesus. Preacher of the Good News.
