About Larry
  • Education: Thm. Moody Theology Seminary. However, some of the best training I received was being raised in a church planting pastor’s home. My parents taught me the value of prayer, communion with God and serving the community.
  • Experience: Four of our five children have served in missions in Latin America, Africa, Russia, and New York City. My wife, Diane and I have served in Africa, Latin America, and the Philippine Islands. We have also served as pastors in Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida and Ohio during the past forty years.
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: You, the preacher, are a gift from God to your audience. Don’t take your preaching / teaching / ministering responsibilities lightly. Although your pulpit may take only a fraction of your pastoral time, the powerful Word of God will changes lives for eternity. Yes, we must walk humbly before the Lord, but be proud to be a preacher of righteousness. "He put you into the ministry and called you with a Holy Calling." Be encouraged. Your preaching matters!
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: The following sermon series changed my life and direction forever in 1984. (1) "You Teach the Traditions of Men, Making them the Doctines of God." (2) "Speaking Where the Word of God Speaks and Silent Where it is Silent" (3) "Spirit Enabled Fellowship; Getting Up When You Wake Up." (2006)
  • One of my favorite illustrations: "And it came to pass. It did not come to stay!"
  • Family: We are the proud and thankful parents of five children and eight grandchildren. Four generations of ministers have graced our family.
  • What my parents think of my sermons: My father, a retired pastor thinks my preaching is relevant, although less traditional than he would prefer. My dear mother, cheers me on from heaven’s portals, when she pauses from worshipping before His Throne.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: Larry, the message your brought today was great! I studied that passage and had those thoughts and insights three months ago!
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: Pray for the congregation. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the word of the day they need. Study that word throughly. Pray it in on Saturday. Update and make minor changes on Sunday morning. Allow the Holy Spirit to minister the Word of God through you.
  • Books that have had an impact: E.M. Bounds books on Prayer. Fransis Frangipane’s "The Three Battlegrounds. O.S. Davis 21 Laws of Communication. John Maxwells Injoy Club. Obviously, nothing touches the Word of God, the Bible.
  • Hobbies: Reading, writing, fishing, and talking about playing golf! When I play golf, I ask the Lord to forgive me.......for not playing more! I enjoy it so much, but it is rare these days.
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: "You can become what God has called you to become and you can do the works he beforehand ordained you to do, by grace through faith!"
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: My dad was preaching and the entire window casing fell out of the church santuary with a huge bang! Everyone nearly jumped out of their pews!(result of a church building committee, "Oh we can do this ourselves and save the church some money!"
  • What I want on my tombstone: Servant of the Lord
