About Jon
  • Education: I received a BA in Biblical Studies from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, in 1974. I earned a Masters of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, in 1979.
  • Experience: I have pastored three churches in my 24 years of ministry. The first was in Wolverton, Minnesota; a small Evangelical Free Church in a farming community south of Moorhead,Minnesota. The second was in the city of Chaska, a suburb of the Twin Cities. We then moved out to Arizona to plant this church, where we have been for the past 16 years.
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: I finally took the plunge and preached through the Book of Revelation. Wow! It was a very enlightening experience, so much so that I have put the series into book form. "Revelation Plain and Simple" (Xulon Press) will be available in June of 2006. It has a "big picture" approach to the book, seeking to discover the great themes and avoid endless speculation about the details.
  • Family: My wife Jan and I are blessed with 3 wonderful children. Amy is a graduate of Arizona State University and was recently married to Brycen Snyder. They live right here in Chandler. Jill is beginning her Junior year at Azusa Pacific University and is majoring in English. Tom is a Senior at Dobson HIgh School. My wife Jan is an Extended Kindergarten teacher with the Mesa Public Schools. She is a wonderful support in my ministry and a great mom to our kids!
  • What my parents think of my sermons: They go to my church, and they stay awake!
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: In her own quiet way, Jan appreciates the truth that is proclaimed, especially the reality of the grace of God as the rock of our salvation
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: Don’t just cover the passage; uncover the passage for the people. And remember the context!!
  • Books that have had an impact: Martyn Lloyd-Jones on Romans, Grudem’s "Systematic Theology", "The Lord of the Rings" by Tolkien
  • Hobbies: I enjoy golf, racquetball, and sailing. Since water is relatively short supply in Arizona, I focus mostly on the golf and racquetball. I am also a big-time reader, enjoying all kinds of books, from Tom Clancy to Sherlock Holmes.
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: It’s all about the Lord Jesus Christ
  • What I want on my tombstone: He preached the Lord Jesus Christ
