About John
  • Education: AAS - Electronics Engineering Technology (Wake Tech) BS - Computer Information Systems (NC Wesleyan Univ.) MA - Pastoral Ministries (Northwest Nazarene Univ.)
  • Experience: Over two decades behind the pulpit and much longer in several teaching and ministry positions.
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: You are welcome to change whatever you wish. In fact, you will probably need to change some anecdotes and examples to suit your personal experiences more. I love writing sermons and am open to constructive criticism. Please leave comments! I look forward to getting involved in the SermonCentral Community.
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: Billy Graham - What's Wrong With the World - https://youtu.be/KHot_ZbcZuI
  • One of my favorite illustrations: You are not special, but you are precious!
  • What my parents think of my sermons: They love them.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: She loves them.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: If God told you to do it, no one can stop you!
  • Books that have had an impact: Bible. All the works of Carl Jung. The Lord of the Rings. The Chronicles of Narnia and every single last thing C. S. Lewis ever wrote. His Utmost for His Highest. And of course G. K. Chesterton.
  • Hobbies: Reading, cooking, laughing
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: Jesus loves you! The Beast hates you. Choose wisely!
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: One day during our Christmas service we were lighting the advent candles. The advent candle of hope went out right after it was lit. Some people in the congregation were giving me signs that something was wrong. I finally realized what had happened (after a minute or longer) and went to relight it. As I approached the candle, it burst back to life. You had to be there, but it was lovingly peculiar!
  • What I want on my tombstone: Respawning in 3....2....1
