Thanksgiving: It's Not Easy
Contributed on Sep 10, 2004
Thanksgiving, while perhaps something we most need to do, turns out to be the most difficult thing we do. A brief examination shows us why.
Thanksgiving: It’s not easy Introduction: Thanksgiving: we have celebratory day for it every year. It’s a very American holiday, and it is deeply ingrained in our culture. We devote a day just to thanksgiving - at least that is what we claim. That doesn’t sound so tough. In fact, you ...read more

Mixing Politics And Religion
Contributed on Jul 11, 2004
Election sermons were common, even expected, in early America. This is a 21st century election sermon. Here we explore, not party politics, but principles of politics from the word of God.
Mixing Politics and Religion Politics is the process by which we establish government. The word "politics" is derived from two words. The first, "poly", is a Latin word meaning many. The second, "tics", describes blood-sucking creatures. I’m kidding, of course, but - In my many years of ...read more

Confident Of His Coming
Contributed on May 25, 2004
Though people have and continue to doubt that Jesus will return, we can be confident of His coming because God has judged the world before, because God is not bound by time, and because Christ’s coming will not be preceded by definite signs.
Confident of His Coming II Peter 3:1-13 Maranatha - - come quickly, Lord Jesus. Quickly, you say? What’s so quick about two thousand years? (The third millennium, by the way, started not so long ago!) Come where? Do what? Would you really want Jesus to come? Why can’t he just stay ...read more

The God Of Truth
Contributed on May 25, 2004
Christians must fight a battle for truth - not just for "truths" but for the very idea and possibility of truth.
The God of Truth Ps. 31:1-5 As a campus minister, it is easy enough for me to see problems in our world today -- from individuals who are just not sure if there is any way to make sense of life to the "Gay and Lesbian Alliance." There is an almost endless list of people and groups without an ...read more

Who Alone Is Immortal
Contributed on May 24, 2004
Long ago C. H. Spurgeon said that the study of God would improve, humble, and expand the mind - a thesis we will test with an examination of 1 Tim 6:13-16.
“Who Alone Is Immortal” What better way to begin my sermon than by reading from a really good one! Here is a bit of one delivered on Jan. 7, 1855: “It has been said by someone that ‘the proper study of mankind is man.’. . . but I believe it is equally true that the proper study of God’s ...read more

It Is Interesting, Is It Not, That So Many ...
Contributed on May 25, 2004
It is interesting, is it not, that so many Christians spend so much time predicting when the coming of Jesus will occur. A few years ago I was on a Christian radio talk show to discuss politics. As we were leaving the studio, we met the fellow who was coming in to do the show after us. He had ...read more

Ever Since Our Fathers Died, Everything Goes On ...
Contributed on May 25, 2004
"Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation." This charge could be summarized by saying, "If Jesus is coming back, what’s taking Him so long?" This is a question that has been asked not only by skeptics, but by believers who have assumed that Jesus ...read more

William Cullen Bryant: Truth
Contributed on May 25, 2004
As William Cullen Bryant has written: Truth crushed to earth shall rise again, the eternal years of God are hers; but error, wounded, ...read more
