About H. Kevin
  • Education: Biblical Theological Seminary, D.Min. 2009 Bethany Theological Seminary, M.Div. 1998 Bridgewater College, Religion and Philosophy, B.A. 1991
  • Experience: Chaplain, Pennsylvania State Parks, Summers 88, 89 Summer Pastor, Mount Joy Church of the Brethren, Summer 90 Youth Pastor, Dayton Church of the Brethren, 89-91 Pastor, Yellow Creek and Bethel Churches of the Brethren, 91-93 Pastor, Beech Grove Church of the Brethren, 94-99 Pastor, First Church of the Brethren, 99-present
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: Romans and Hebrews Sermon Series, they were the first time that I took in depth looks at the whole of a book. I found my research tools to be limited, and began to look at more and more technical commentaries as well as improving my Greek skills. I'm in the process of adding Hebrew and Latin to my skill set.
  • One of my favorite illustrations: "People who believe that little green men are chasing them, run."
  • Family: Kevin and Pat Derr. We've been married for almost 11 years now, and are enjoying our son, he was born in September. We also have a dog named Lucky.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: "People can only go where their leaders take them." If you preach superficially, you will only develop superficial people. You cannot expect your people to develop good biblical world views if you do not provide them.
  • Books that have had an impact: Celebration of Discipline, by Richard Foster. The Gagging of God, D.A. Carson Preface to Theology, Yoder Foundations for Church Growth, Hunter
  • Hobbies: Old houses, reading, Cars, cooking, travel, family, history, and fishisng
