Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Our ordinary lives, like bread, can be blessed, broken, and given by Jesus to serve a greater purpose. We are called to see our lives as more than just ordinary, but as a means to serve and bless others.
Ever thought about how bread is like, everywhere? Seriously, think about it. In France, they've got baguettes and croissants. In Mexico, they've got tortillas. In India, they've got naan. And here in the US, we've got good old sliced white bread.
Bread is like the most ordinary thing ever, right? But here's the thing, our lives are a lot like bread. Most of what we do is pretty ordinary. We go to school, do our homework, hang out with friends, play video games, and try to get through the day without getting into too much trouble.
But what if I told you that your ordinary life could be extraordinary?
Let's look at a story from the Bible. [Read Luke 9:10-12] In Luke 9, Jesus and his disciples are hanging out with a huge crowd of people. It's getting late, and the disciples are like, "Jesus, we should send these people home. We don't have enough food for them." But Jesus says, "You give them something to eat."
The disciples are like, "Uh, we only have five loaves of bread and two fish." But Jesus takes the bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to the disciples to give to the crowd. And guess what? Everyone eats until they're full, and there's even leftovers.
Jesus took something ordinary - bread - and made it extraordinary.
Now, let's do a little object lesson. I want everyone to take out a piece of paper and a pen. Write down something ordinary about your life. It could be anything - going to school, doing chores, playing a sport. Now, I want you to think about how Jesus could make that ordinary thing extraordinary.
Maybe it's using your love for video games to connect with someone who's feeling left out. Maybe it's using your chores as a way to serve your family and show them love. Maybe it's using your sport to encourage others and be a good teammate.
Just like Jesus blessed, broke, and gave the bread, He can bless, break, and give your life. He can take your ordinary and make it extraordinary.
So here's your challenge for this week: Take that ordinary thing you wrote down and ask Jesus to make it extraordinary. Look for ways to serve others, to show love, to make a difference.
Let's pray. Dear Jesus, thank you for taking our ordinary lives and making them extraordinary. Help us to see the ways we can serve others and show your love. Bless us, break us, and give us for the life of the world. Amen.
1. How do you see your life as ordinary like bread?
2. How can your life be blessed, broken, and given for others?
3. What are some ways you can 'give' yourself to others this week?
4. How does it feel to think of your life as more than just ordinary?
5. How can we see God's glory in the ordinary things around us?
