You Died

"You Died" Colossians 3:1-11

1. “You Died” 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God

• When you die death is a process where the body gradually shuts down

• You are unable to do the things you once did.

• You can’t do certain things any longer

2. When you died at the funeral

• I have noticed a person gets casket that now fits them their favorite color

• I also notice must folks who die are dressed in a new suit or dress their hair

• Must people choose attire that is respectful and appropriate for the occasion.

3. Paul tells the folks in colossi

• He tells the folks in Colossi that they died but they are raised in Christ 31Since, then, you have been raised with Christ,

• Since your raised in Christ you set your minds in new places

• New Places involve Bible Studies, Prayer groups,

• They died but a new Identity has risen

4. Paul shares to the folks that since they died the old clothes don’t fit them anymore

• Fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, greed (idolatry) it just doesn’t fit

• Anger, wrath, malice, slander, abusive language

• Lying and deceit These behaviors are incompatible with the redeemed life and they don’t fit

• Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: Believers are called to actively reject sinful desires and actions?

• Because of these, the wrath of God is coming: The consequences of continuing in these sins are a serious reminder. 6Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.

• You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived: This highlights the transformation from a former life of sin to a new life in Christ.

5. Since you died you wear new clothes Colossians 3:1–2

• since you died you wear the image of the creator 10you have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

• Since you died you wear compassion , clothe yourselves with compassion Jesus modeled compassion: for adulterers, lepers, sinners

• Kindness, encouragement, gentleness, boosting others

•

6. Since we died we are transformed Colossians 3:10

• Put on the new self, renewed in knowledge according to the image of the Creator

• Do not lie to one another... and have put on the new self: 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices

• The transformed life involves living truthfully and authentically.

• Being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator: This is an ongoing process of growth in Christ-likeness through increasing knowledge of Christ,

7. Since we died all people are treated equally 11Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

• Since we died we died death and the old man shut down

• Since we died we had our funeral and Christ put new garments on us

• Since we died we are now raised with Christ

• Since we died the old garments don’t fit

• Since we died we are changed transformed

8. Finally some folks in the Bible that died

• Moses: He was a murderer and a fugitive, who died took off his shoes and walked on holy Ground

• Jacob died his name meant "deceiver," he lived up to his name through various cunning acts. One night he wrestled with God, leading to a new name, Israel, meaning "struggles with God" or "God prevails," Surely the Lord is in this place.
