You 2.0

May 17, 2015 Morning Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: We are a NEW creation; we don’t HAVE to behave like our tendencies dictate.

Focus Passage: Colossians 3:1-17

Supplemental Passage: (1 Corinthians 13:11 NASB) When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

(2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB) Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Introduction: When a new version of software is released they give it a designation like “DOS 2.0”. Using this same terminology, when a person is born again, in a way it is like “your name 2.0.” In reality, it is much more than that, but that is a concept we can understand.

I. Alive in Christ (1-4)

a. Set your mind on the things above

b. Your life is hidden with Christ in God

c. Christ is our life

II. Dead to Sin (5-11)

a. Consider (or think) of yourself as dead to sin.

b. Put sin aside

c. Lay aside the old self; put on the new self

III. How to live (12-17)

a. Put on love

b. Let Christ’s peace rule your heart

c. Be thankful

d. Read & live the Word of God

e. If you can’t do it and bring honor to Jesus, then don’t do it.

Invitation/Application: What tendencies are you still battling with from your old life? Addiction? Bitterness? An unforgiving spirit? Anger? Gossip? No matter the sin, you have been made new and do not have to give in to that sin. Don't be stuck at You 2.0. Allow the Lord to "upgrade" you to a higher level (sanctification).
