Summary: While His life revolutionized Hebrew thinking and affected much of world history, He did not come to overthrow the government.

Some try to make Jesus a political revolutionary. That was not His mission, nor is it the Church's

Matthew 22:15  Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.

17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?... See More

18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way. KJV

The Herodians hated the Roman Empire, which was a very wicked empire, and wanted Israel to be free and established under Herod. Hence the question about tribute money or taxes.

If He would have said don't pay it then Rome would have gotten after Him. If He just said pay it the Herodians would have said He was a Roman spy or a traitor to Israel or something. Instead the answer was done in such a way it shut the Herodians mouths without either condemning or justifying the Romans.

He was here to defeat the devil the first revolutionary recorded who fought against God's empire. He had no interest in such things as who ran kingdoms for indeed He (God) raised up and tore down kingdoms.

The Bible teaches a great deal about submission, not just humans submitting to God and the woman submitting to the headship of the man or children submitting to the parents. It also speaks to employees submitting to supervisors be they bad or good and to citizens submitting to the Government.

Before some one slings Acts 5:28,29 at me remember they were speaking to a body that technically only had authority as a religious body which is why they had to go to Rome to get Jesus crucified. They had a law for stoning to death a blasphemer as they accused Jesus of but they had no law or authority to bring it to pass.

Our mission is to win souls and edify saints. I see nothing in the New Testament that speaks to anything but doing that and living a life pleasing to God and submitting to whatever government is in place when it comes to things under their jurisdiction. He did not say only when you agree with what is being done.

Be careful what you do that you say is in the name of Christ for He may not be pleased with it when you stand before Him.
