Worship
Introduction: Worship for the first time in the Bible is mentioned in Genesis. Genesis 22:5 He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." Abraham worshipped God. Let us see how Abraham worshipped God.
Genesis 22:1 Abraham Tested 1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!” "Here I am," he replied.
God tests his people. God called Abraham when he was 75 and gave him a son when he became 100. By Genesis 22 Abraham is probably in a very happy situation. The promise that God gave him years ago has been fulfilled. The problem creator in the family, Ishmael and Hagar has been sent away. Abraham is rich and almost settled. Now the Bible says God tested Abraham.
a. God tests us in our blessings. When all our prayers are answered and when we feel everything is going great God tests his people to know if we truly love him or not.
b. God test us in our trials also. Deuteronomy 8:2 Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
Now let us look into some aspects of Abraham’s worship.
Genesis 22:1-2 1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.
2 Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."
1. Worship is based on knowing who our God is.
Abraham had a revelation from God. That led him to worship. We cannot worship God if we really do not know who our God is.
2. We need to prepare ourselves for worship both physically and spiritually. Genesis 22:3 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.
3. We need to keep ourselves away from anything that hinders our worship. Genesis 22:4-5 4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you."
4. We need to declare victory over our circumstances by faith even before we set out to worship God. Genesis 22:6-8 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" 8 Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together.
Abraham declared victory over his circumstances by faith in God.
5. We need to completely surrender ourselves in worship. Genesis 22:9-10 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
Conclusion: As a result of worship God restored back his son to Abraham. This morning let us worship God based on how Abraham worshipped God. The Bible says the covenant of Abraham is an everlasting covenant and it still holds good. If we worship truly and wholeheartedly God will restore all that the devil has taken away. Amen.
